New medical support aims to strengthen tuberculosis detection and treatment under expanded bilateral health cooperation
The United States has provided Bangladesh with a significant medical aid package, including 600,000 GeneXpert tuberculosis (TB) testing kits and 11,000 treatment courses of TB medicine for children, as part of ongoing health cooperation between the two countries.
The donation was officially handed over during a ceremony held on Thursday (April 30) at a tuberculosis hospital in Dhaka. U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen, presented the medical supplies on behalf of the U.S. government.
The event was attended by Bangladesh’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bokul and Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, Professor Dr. Provat Chandra Biswas, along with other senior health officials.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, this support is designed to address critical supply gaps in Bangladesh’s tuberculosis detection and treatment system. The initiative is also part of a broader five-year global health security framework under which the United States is strengthening health partnerships with developing countries.
Officials noted that tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in Bangladesh, particularly in densely populated urban and low-income areas. Faster and more accurate diagnostic tools like GeneXpert kits are expected to improve early detection rates and help prevent further transmission of the disease.
In addition to diagnostic support, the donation includes pediatric TB treatment courses, which are essential for addressing infections among children, a group that often faces delays in diagnosis and treatment due to limited specialized resources.
Health experts in Bangladesh have welcomed the assistance, stating that such international cooperation plays a crucial role in strengthening the country’s healthcare system and ensuring timely access to life-saving medical services.
The U.S. Embassy emphasized that this initiative reflects Washington’s continued commitment to global health security and its long-term partnership with Bangladesh in combating infectious diseases.
Officials from both sides expressed optimism that continued collaboration will help improve disease control efforts and enhance public health resilience across the country.
