The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has responded to the death sentence handed down to ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.
On Monday (17 November), the organization’s spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, issued an official response in a statement released from Geneva.
She said, “Today in Dhaka, the International Crimes Tribunal delivered its verdict in the crimes against humanity case against former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. This is an important moment for the victims of the serious human rights violations committed during last year’s crackdown on protests.”
She added, “Since the publication of our investigative report in February 2025, we have repeatedly called for all perpetrators including those in positions of command and leadership to be held accountable in accordance with international standards. We have also urged that victims be ensured access to effective remedies and compensation.”
Shamdasani said, “We did not directly monitor the proceedings of this trial, but we consistently emphasize the need for due process and adherence to international standards in any accountability mechanism dealing with allegations of international crimes. This is particularly important in this case, where the trial was held in the absence of the accused and resulted in a death sentence.”
She further said, “We also note with regret the imposition of the death penalty; we oppose the death penalty in all circumstances.”
Calling on all parties concerned to act with restraint following the verdict, Shamdasani said, “UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed hope that Bangladesh will move toward a comprehensive process of truth-seeking, reparations, and justice. This should include meaningful and transformative security sector reform in line with international standards, so that such violations and abuses do not recur. The High Commissioner’s Office stands ready to support the Government and people of Bangladesh in this effort.”
