Bangladesh restarts wheat imports via Hili port as trade resumes following the lifting of India’s export restrictions.

Wheat imports from India to Bangladesh have resumed through the Hili Land Port in Dinajpur after a gap of four years, bringing relief to traders and workers dependent on cross-border trade.

The import activity restarted on Saturday (April 12) following the withdrawal of restrictions, with a total of 116 tonnes of wheat entering Bangladesh in three trucks.

The consignment was imported by M/S Mifa International, a local importing firm. The reopening of wheat imports has generated optimism among port stakeholders, who had been affected by the long suspension.

India had halted wheat exports on May 13, 2022, due to rising domestic prices, leading to a complete توقف of wheat imports through Hili and other land ports in Bangladesh.

With the resumption of imports, traders expect a steady supply of wheat in the coming days, which could help stabilize the domestic market and meet growing demand.

Business leaders at the port expressed hope that regular imports will continue, easing pressure on local markets and supporting economic activity in the region.
