The main suspect, Yasin Arafat, arrested for leading the cremation of Dipu Chandra Das' body after his murder in Mymensingh.

A significant development has occurred in the murder case of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker from Mymensingh, who was brutally killed and then his body set on fire. The police have arrested a youth, Yasin Arafat, who allegedly led the cremation of the victim's body following the murder.

Yasin Arafat, 25, was arrested from the Sarulia area of Demra, Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon. He is the son of Gazi Miah from the South Hobirbari area of Valuka. According to police sources, Arafat had been working as an imam at the Sheikhbari Mosque and as a teacher at the Madina Tahfizul Quran Madrasa in the neighboring Kashar area.

The murder took place on December 18, when Dipu was killed on charges of blasphemy. After killing him, his body was tied with a rope, hung from a tree, and then set on fire. A video of the horrific incident went viral on social media, sparking national outrage.

Following the incident, Dipu’s younger brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a case against 150 unknown individuals at the Valuka Police Station. As of now, 22 people have been arrested in connection with the crime.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun, Yasin Arafat was the one who organized and led the mob at the factory gate, chanting slogans, and played a leading role in dragging and burning the victim’s body in the Square Masterbari area.

Yasin went into hiding after the murder but was later found in Dhaka’s Sarulia area, where he had been teaching at a madrasa while staying under the radar. He remained a fugitive for 12 days before his arrest.

So far, 21 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, with 18 of them being sent to jail after their remand hearings. Nine of the accused have confessed to the crime during their court testimony under Section 164. Efforts are ongoing to remand the remaining suspects.
