Yemeni Illiterate Woman Memorizes Entire Holy Quran at Age 80 by Listening Alone

The Chronify

An elderly woman from Yemen’s Taiz province has completed memorizing the Holy Quran without formal education, relying solely on listening and determination over a decade.

An extraordinary story of faith, perseverance, and dedication has emerged from Yemen, where an 80-year-old illiterate woman has reportedly memorized the entire Holy Quran by relying only on listening.

Hajia Maryam Al-Ramimah, from the Taiz province, achieved what many consider a remarkable spiritual milestone despite never receiving formal education. According to local reports, her journey began after her son established a Quran memorization center in their village, which inspired her to pursue her long-held desire to memorize the Quran.

Born in a rural mountainous area where educational opportunities for women were extremely limited, Maryam spent most of her life engaged in household responsibilities and agricultural work. However, she maintained a strong spiritual aspiration to memorize the Quran, even without being able to read or write.

Her learning method relied entirely on repeated listening. She used cassette recordings of Quran recitations, listening attentively for hours each day. With the help of a local female teacher and her family, she gradually began memorizing verses through repetition and continuous practice.

Reports suggest she followed a disciplined routine for nearly ten years. She would attend learning sessions in the afternoon, revise earlier portions, and spend long hours listening to recorded recitations during the night. Her family supported her by preparing new recordings whenever she completed memorizing sections.

The process was not without difficulty. Certain chapters were particularly challenging, requiring extended repetition and concentration. Despite her age and lack of formal education, she persisted until she eventually completed the full memorization of the Quran around 2016.

Her achievement has since become a source of inspiration in her community, especially given the difficult conditions in the region, including conflict, shortages, and unstable infrastructure. Even during times of hardship, she continued her practice, often in silence and isolation, maintaining her routine with strong determination.

Maryam’s family, including her children and grandchildren many of whom are university graduates have expressed admiration for her accomplishment. They describe her journey as a powerful example of faith and mental strength that transcends education and age.

Now in her early eighties, her health has begun to decline, and she reportedly struggles with memory at times. However, she continues to recite regularly and remains deeply connected to the verses she memorized over years of dedication.

Her story continues to resonate widely as an example of spiritual devotion and the power of consistent effort, even in the most challenging circumstances.
