AI has joined the World Cup ball, along with another special feature

Every World Cup features a specially designed ball that draws attention. For the 2026 World Cup, Adidas has created the “Trianda”. FIFA unveiled the ball at a grand event in Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York.
At the ball unveiling event, former stars including Germany’s Jürgen Klinsmann, Brazil’s Cafu, Italy’s Alessandro Del Piero, Spain’s Xavi Hernández, and France’s Zinedine Zidane were present. The host then officially presented the Trianda to the audience.
Since the 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the ball was named “Trianda” with “Tri” representing the three host countries, and “Anda” coming from the Spanish word meaning wave or rhythm. Its design features the colors blue, red, and green, symbolizing the three nations.
The Trianda’s most notable feature is that it is the first World Cup ball designed with the host countries’ diverse climates in mind. During June-July, the 16 host cities experience varying weather conditions some with high humidity, others with differences in altitude or temperature. Adidas has engineered the ball to perform consistently across all environments, adding special textures and extra grip to achieve this.
Solene Sturman, Adidas’ Global Category Director, said, “We knew there were 16 venues, each with different weather conditions. We wanted to ensure the ball works perfectly everywhere.”
In addition to climate adaptation, the ball also features an AI-powered chip. Like the previous Al Rihla, this chip assists referees in making faster and more accurate decisions. It also provides data on players’ touches, dribbles, passes, and other metrics, with Adidas hoping these insights will contribute to future technological developments in football.
Adidas stated that the Trianda is their most extensively tested World Cup ball. The company conducted wind tunnel tests in collaboration with their in-house labs and Loughborough University. It was then trialed by Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX players.
Sturman added, “We tested it not just in labs but also on the field with players professional and amateur alike. We gathered feedback from everyone.”
