Bangladesh Likely to Play T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka as BCB Gains Upper Hand

The Chronify

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is on the verge of a victory in its venue dispute for the T20 World Cup, with sources confirming that all group-stage matches will likely take place in Sri Lanka instead of India.

Bangladesh appears to be on the brink of securing a major win in its ongoing standoff with the International Cricket Council (ICC) over the T20 World Cup venue. Reliable sources suggest that all of Bangladesh’s group-stage matches will likely be moved to Sri Lanka, instead of being held in India as originally planned.

After weeks of intense negotiations and pressure, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reportedly convinced the ICC to reconsider its stance on the venue. This follows Bangladesh’s firm refusal to play in India, citing security concerns and the controversial exclusion of star pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL.

Despite repeated persuasion from Indian cricket authorities, BCB stood its ground, leading to the ICC's expected decision to allow Bangladesh to play all group-stage matches in Sri Lanka. This, however, will require the ICC to make adjustments to the original schedule, including possibly reshuffling group compositions.

Originally placed in Group C with England, West Indies, Nepal, and Italy, the venue change could alter Bangladesh’s group opponents and match distribution for India and Sri Lanka. As the issue continues to stir debate in both India and Bangladesh, the BCCI has maintained that no formal communication regarding the change has been received. However, sources suggest the ICC is now preparing to send an official letter in Bangladesh's favor.

If confirmed, this decision will mark a rare instance where the ICC has sided with a smaller cricketing nation, emphasizing that player safety must take precedence over commercial or political concerns. The ICC is expected to make an official announcement once all logistical details are settled.
