Bangladesh Cricket Board announces infrastructure upgrade including 27,000 sq ft canopy and eco-friendly solar energy system at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced a major infrastructure development plan for the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, aiming to enhance spectator comfort and introduce sustainable energy solutions.

One of the key features of the initiative is the construction of a large canopy over the Eastern Gallery, which is widely regarded as one of the most popular seating areas among fans during both international and domestic matches. Currently, most sections of the stadium have partial shading, but the Eastern Gallery remains exposed, causing discomfort for spectators during extreme heat and rain.

BCB Ad-hoc Committee Chairman Tamim Iqbal shared details of the plan during a press briefing on April 30. He stated that approximately 27,000 square feet of canopy will be installed to fully cover the gallery area. According to him, the decision has already been agreed upon in principle and the implementation process has begun.

Tamim explained that the goal is to ensure a better viewing experience for fans who often purchase the most affordable tickets but endure harsh weather conditions. He added that the design concept is similar to recent upgrades seen in other stadiums, and the board expects the project to be completed soon.

In addition to the canopy, the BCB is also exploring the installation of a solar power system across the stadium. This initiative aims to reduce electricity costs and promote environmentally friendly energy use. Officials noted that the stadium currently incurs a significant monthly electricity bill, and the solar system could help reduce long-term operational expenses.

The idea for the solar project was reportedly suggested by Youth and Sports Adviser Aminul Haque and Ad-hoc Committee member Fahim Sinha. Tamim said that the project is still in its early planning phase, and feasibility studies are underway to assess investment costs and expected returns.

He emphasized that all infrastructure decisions will be carefully evaluated before implementation to ensure both financial viability and environmental benefits.

If completed, the project is expected to make Mirpur Stadium more sustainable while significantly improving comfort for thousands of cricket fans who regularly attend matches at the venue.
