Brazil at Their Lowest in World Cup Qualifying History

In South America’s World Cup qualifiers, the current 10-team home-and-away format has been in place since 1996. For the first time since then, Brazil have finished a qualifying campaign with fewer than 30 points. Previously, Brazil’s worst performance came during the qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup. Despite a turbulent campaign, the team went on to win their fifth World Cup title in South Korea and Japan.
It should be noted that, as the defending champions of the 1994 World Cup, Brazil did not have to play the qualifiers for the 1998 edition. Similarly, as the host nation of the 2014 World Cup, they also skipped the qualifiers for that tournament. In both cases, Brazil qualified directly for the finals.

"The positive aspect of today’s game was the effort shown by the team and the players. Playing here is extremely challenging, and that was known in advance. The players gave an outstanding effort. The match was highly demanding both strategically and physically."

Despite a disappointing qualifying campaign, Ancelotti remains optimistic about the 2026 World Cup:
"Based on the team’s performances in the matches, I am fully confident that the squad can succeed in the World Cup and compete in every game. Today’s match was very special in every respect."
