Fayez Ahmad Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor of the Caretaker Government, has stated that Cricinfo is the leading platform for online gambling advertisements in Bangladesh. He also mentioned that the popular cricket website does not pay any VAT or taxes on the revenue it earns from these advertisements.

Cricinfo does not publish gambling advertisements in countries like Australia and England. Therefore, considering the overall situation, the government has taken the initiative to block Cricinfo in Bangladesh. However, public opinion will be taken before making the final decision.

This information was shared in a Facebook post late Monday night (13 October) by the Special Assistant for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology to the Chief Advisor.

Fayez Ahmad stated that online gambling, its promotion, and advertisements are prohibited under the Bangladesh Cyber Security Act, 2025.

He mentioned that the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) reviewed Cricinfo’s advertisements in countries like Australia and England, where international cricket is played, and found that online gambling advertisements are completely absent there. Cricinfo is violating the law by displaying such ads only in Bangladesh.

The Special Assistant also wrote that Cricinfo has not paid any income tax or VAT to the Government of Bangladesh on the revenue earned from illegal advertisements, either before or after the law was passed. To stop the illegal gambling advertisements, the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) has already sent an email to Cricinfo, and a registered letter will be sent via post.

Fayez Ahmad Tayyab stated that if Cricinfo does not stop gambling advertisements, the National Cyber Security Agency will seek public opinion on whether it would be appropriate to block Cricinfo in Bangladesh.
