Bangladesh all-rounder Mehedi Hasan expresses confidence in the Bangladesh Cricket Board and government’s decision regarding the T20 World Cup.
As uncertainty surrounds Bangladesh's participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, Bangladesh's all-rounder Mehedi Hasan stated that while players would naturally want to play in the World Cup, they should abide by the decisions made by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the government.
Speaking at a press conference on January 22, 2026, in Mirpur, where he attended as the captain of Chattogram Royals, Mehedi commented on the ongoing issue regarding Bangladesh’s participation in the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has clearly stated that Bangladesh must play in India, but the BCB has firmly stated that the security concerns related to playing in India have led them to request to play their matches in Sri Lanka instead.
"See, as players, who wouldn’t want to play in the World Cup? Everyone would want to, but this is entirely the board's decision. The government also has its stance on this issue. They are like our guardians, and I believe as players, we should respect and follow whatever they decide," said Mehedi Hasan.
This statement reflects the sentiment of many players, who, while eager to represent their country on the global stage, understand the importance of the decisions made by the governing bodies of Bangladesh cricket. Mehedi's comments come ahead of a crucial meeting between Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul and the players on January 22, where the ongoing situation regarding the World Cup will be discussed.
The BCB's firm stance on the matter, citing security concerns in India, has put the team in a difficult position. The board’s decision will be guided by the best interests of the players, ensuring their safety and wellbeing are prioritized.
While the cricketers hope to participate in the World Cup, they are fully aware that the final decision rests with the BCB and the Bangladesh government. As the situation continues to unfold, the cricketing world awaits the final verdict on Bangladesh’s participation in the prestigious tournament.
