Denied a US Visa for the World Cup? Argentine Company Gives Away Free TVs to Disappointed Fans

In a creative response to World Cup heartbreak, Argentine electronics giant Newsan handed out free Noblex televisions to football fans whose US visa applications were rejected. The campaign turned disappointment into celebration as dozens of supporters prepared to cheer for Argentina from home.
For many Argentine football fans, the dream of travelling to the United States to witness the 2026 FIFA World Cup in person ended with a visa rejection. But for some of them, disappointment came with an unexpected consolation prize: a brand-new television set.
Argentine conglomerate Newsan, the manufacturer behind the well-known local electronics brand Noblex, launched an unusual promotional campaign aimed at supporters whose plans to attend the World Cup had been derailed by failed visa applications.
Under the initiative, the company offered free Noblex televisions to the first 100 people who arrived at its Buenos Aires office with official documentation proving that their applications for US visas had been denied between January and June this year.
The campaign quickly captured public attention after Newsan promoted it on social media with a simple message: "Give us your denied visa and take a free TV."
On Wednesday morning, dozens of football enthusiasts queued outside the company's offices carrying rejection letters and visa documents, hoping to secure one of the limited giveaways. Television boxes distributed during the event carried stickers bearing the phrases "Visa Denied" and "TV Noblex Approved," adding a humorous touch to what had been a frustrating experience for many fans.
Among those who benefited from the campaign was 24-year-old professional video game player Tomas Vageller, who had hoped to travel to North America to support Argentina during what many believe could be Lionel Messi's final appearance on football's biggest stage.
"I applied for a visa because many of us think this could be Messi's last World Cup," Vageller said after receiving his television. "It's very sad that I won't be able to be there in person, but at least I'm leaving with a gift."
The initiative reflects both the immense passion for football in Argentina and the challenges some supporters have faced while attempting to secure travel documents for the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Despite Argentina entering the competition as one of the world's football powerhouses and defending champions, enthusiasm ahead of the 2026 tournament has been somewhat more subdued compared with the feverish atmosphere surrounding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Many supporters had viewed the Qatar tournament as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to witness Messi lift the World Cup trophy. His success in Doha fulfilled a lifelong dream for millions of Argentines and cemented his status as one of the sport's greatest players.
Now, as the countdown to the 2026 World Cup continues, thousands of Argentine fans who had hoped to follow their team overseas are preparing to experience the tournament from living rooms, neighbourhood gatherings and local fan zones instead.
Thanks to Newsan's unconventional gesture, at least 100 disappointed supporters will be doing so with a brand-new television a reminder that while travel plans may fail, football's ability to unite and uplift fans remains stronger than ever.
