Bangladesh Cricket Board Holds Firm on Stance, Despite ICC's Request to Reconsider Position on T20 World Cup Participation in India

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to reconsider its stance on not participating in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India, but the BCB has remained firm. Despite ICC's pleas, the board has not yet changed its position. As a result, an ICC representative will visit Bangladesh on January 17 to discuss the issue further. The meeting, expected to include representatives from both the BCB and the Bangladeshi government, aims to find a resolution.

In a controversial move, Kolkata Knight Riders had initially picked Bangladesh's star pacer Mustafizur Rahman for a staggering INR 12 million in the IPL auction. However, amid allegations of mistreatment of Hindus in Bangladesh, Mustafizur was removed from the squad by the team, following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This incident raised concerns within the BCB regarding the safety of Bangladeshi players participating in the T20 World Cup in India.

Under the direction of youth and sports advisor Asif Nazrul, the BCB expressed security concerns and formally informed ICC that Bangladesh would not be traveling to India unless these issues were addressed. After receiving responses from the ICC, the BCB sent a follow-up letter with links to various videos and reports published by Indian media. Recently, ICC held a video conference with BCB, urging them to reconsider their position, but the board remained resolute. Consequently, ICC has now decided to send a representative to Bangladesh for direct talks.

Initially, two ICC officials were expected to attend the meeting, but due to visa issues, only one representative will attend. The remaining official from India was unable to travel. ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Head, Andrew Efgreve, will be the sole representative in Bangladesh for the meeting.

Asif Nazrul previously stated, based on an internal ICC risk assessment note, that concerns were raised over the safety of Bangladesh's national team, especially if Mustafizur Rahman was included in the squad and fans wore the team's jersey. However, the BCB later clarified that this issue was not linked to a venue change request by the ICC but rather an internal risk evaluation for the T20 World Cup. The ICC security team has advised the BCB that while some venues carry moderate risks, others present negligible threats. According to the security assessment, there is no substantial reason for the BCB to alter their stance on venue selection.

The outcome of the ICC-Bangladesh talks in Dhaka is awaited, with hopes that the situation can be resolved before the start of the tournament.
