Potential Revenue Loss for BCCI Due to Venue Change Amid Diplomatic Tensions

The upcoming T20 World Cup's four group-stage matches, scheduled to be held in India, are now in jeopardy following escalating diplomatic tensions between Bangladesh and India. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move their matches from Indian soil due to security concerns. If the matches are indeed relocated to Sri Lanka, as reported, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could face significant financial losses.

Originally planned to be held in Kolkata and Mumbai, these four matches were expected to draw large crowds. The Eden Gardens in Kolkata has a seating capacity of 63,000, while Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai can accommodate 33,000 spectators. This setup could have led to the sale of approximately 2.22 lakh tickets for the Bangladesh matches alone, with ticket prices ranging from 100 to 300 rupees.

According to ICC regulations, ticket sales are managed by the ICC Business Corporation, meaning the full revenue would not go to the BCCI. However, the Indian board was expecting to generate substantial earnings from match-day surpluses, local sponsorships, and VIP box hospitality.

If the matches are shifted to Sri Lanka and no other games are scheduled in Kolkata and Mumbai, the loss from ticket sales could range between 10 crore to 40 crore rupees, assuming a 60-90% attendance and average ticket prices of 500 to 1,500 rupees. However, if other matches are scheduled in place of Bangladesh's fixtures, the financial loss would be much lower.
