Argentina’s World Cup–winning captain Lionel Messi is set to renew his contract with Inter Miami after both sides reached an agreement. Once signed, the deal will keep him in Major League Soccer (MLS) beyond the 2026 World Cup.

The 38-year-old Argentine star’s current contract was set to expire at the end of the 2025 season. With a new deal, Messi will continue playing for Inter Miami during and after the 2026 World Cup, which will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. A club source revealed that an official announcement could come within the next two weeks, meaning one of the greatest footballers of all time is likely to end his career in the U.S.

Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving French club PSG, where his two-year stint was not very successful. Previously, he won 10 La Liga titles and 4 Champions League trophies with Barcelona, led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup victory, and won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024. If he plays in the next World Cup, it will be his sixth a new record. He currently has 13 World Cup goals, just three shy of the all-time record held by Miroslav Klose (16).

He became the fastest player to score 40 goals for Inter Miami in MLS. However, the club recently lost 4–0 to PSG in the Club World Cup and 3–0 to Seattle Sounders in the League Cup final.
