The debate over who is the greatest between football’s two superstars, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, has been going on for many years. This time, Ronaldo himself addressed the issue, stating clearly, “Messi is not better than me.”

In an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, Ronaldo said, “Is Messi better than me? I don’t agree. I don’t want to sound humble, but I’m just telling the truth.” A part of this comment was released on Tuesday as a trailer for the full interview, which will be broadcast later. From 2008 to 2017, for almost a decade, Messi and Ronaldo almost exclusively shared football’s most prestigious individual award, the Ballon d’Or.

One was the heart of Barcelona, the other the soul of Real Madrid. Their performances didn’t just fill the record books they transformed the entire culture of football.

Ronaldo has so far won five Champions League titles, while Messi has four. However, in the Ballon d’Or race, Messi leads with eight awards to Ronaldo’s five.

The two legends have brought glory not only to their clubs but also to their nations. Ronaldo led Portugal to victory in Euro 2016, while Lionel Messi guided Argentina to a World Cup triumph in 2022.

Although Messi and Ronaldo are now playing at opposite ends of the world Ronaldo at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia and Messi in Inter Miami in the United States their rivalry and the debate over who is the greatest remain an eternal topic of discussion in the football world.
