The ICC denies reports that Scotland is being considered as a replacement if Bangladesh opts out of the World Cup.
Amid ongoing uncertainty about Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has clarified that no discussions have taken place with Scotland regarding a potential replacement for Bangladesh in the tournament.
Reports from British media outlet BBC Sports suggested that if Bangladesh ultimately decides not to participate in the World Cup in India due to security concerns, Scotland could be chosen as an alternative team. However, the ICC has denied any such conversations with the Scotland Cricket Board.
The issue of Bangladesh’s participation first emerged following the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, prompting the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to express concerns over security in India. BCB had sent a letter to the ICC requesting a shift of their matches to a different venue, but the ICC’s response did not meet expectations, leading to further communication from the BCB.
The ICC representatives held a video conference with the BCB on January 17, and despite assurances regarding security, no resolution was reached. The BCB remains firm in its stance, and a decision on participation has yet to be finalized.
Although Cricinfo reported that the ICC had set a deadline of January 21 for the BCB to make a decision, the BCB has denied this claim. The ICC continues to engage with the BCB but has not confirmed any backup plans, including discussions with Scotland.
