Pakistan Backs Bangladesh Amid T20 World Cup Venue Dispute, Threatens to Reconsider Participation

PCB throws full support behind Bangladesh in ICC T20 World Cup venue row, warning of possible withdrawal.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has openly backed Bangladesh in the ongoing dispute over the venue for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, warning that it may reconsider its participation if Bangladesh’s concerns are not addressed. The controversy escalated after Bangladesh’s star pacer Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad despite being bought for INR 9.2 crore. The removal followed media reports in India accusing Bangladesh of attacks on minorities, triggering public backlash.

In response to this incident, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) raised serious security concerns about playing the T20 World Cup in India. Acting on the instructions of Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul, BCB formally informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that it would not travel to India due to safety risks. Despite ICC’s discussions, including a video conference where ICC officials urged BCB to reconsider, Bangladesh remained firm in its position.

On January 17, ICC’s Head of Anti-Corruption and Security, Andrew F. Greave, visited Dhaka to hold meetings with BCB officials at a five-star hotel. Despite this, BCB continued to demand a venue change.

In a significant development, Pakistan has expressed full support for Bangladesh, warning that it too may reconsider its participation if the ICC ignores Bangladesh's demands. Meanwhile, discussions around potential group reshuffling surfaced, suggesting Bangladesh could swap places with Ireland in Group B, although Cricket Ireland has dismissed the claim. With these developments, the ICC now faces growing pressure to resolve the issue and avoid a potential crisis.
