Pakistan Signals Possible Boycott of World Cup Over ICC's Treatment of Bangladesh

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may consider withdrawing from the upcoming World Cup in solidarity with Bangladesh after the ICC's controversial exclusion of Bangladesh from the tournament.

Pakistan has expressed strong discontent over the International Cricket Council's (ICC) handling of Bangladesh's exclusion from the upcoming T20 World Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has termed the decision discriminatory and unjust, and is considering following Bangladesh's lead by stepping away from the tournament in solidarity.

The PCB is set to meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today, January 26, 2026, to discuss the possibility of a boycott. According to sources close to the Pakistani government, the Federal Government may not grant permission for Pakistan's participation in the joint India-Sri Lanka World Cup.

Pakistan has been a staunch supporter of Bangladesh throughout this issue. After Bangladesh decided not to play in India due to security concerns, the ICC had urged them to reconsider their stance. When Bangladesh insisted on moving its matches to Sri Lanka, the ICC threatened to exclude them from the tournament. Eventually, Bangladesh was replaced by Scotland, much to the frustration of both nations.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi revealed that the board is considering a similar boycott, with all decisions dependent on the government’s stance. The ultimate decision will be made after the meeting between Prime Minister Sharif and PCB officials today.

A high-level source cited by Geo News indicated that the government is likely to withhold permission for Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup, as the country aligns itself with Bangladesh’s call for fair treatment.
