Scaloni Cites Brazil's Shock Exit as Argentina Prepare for Crucial World Cup Clash Against Egypt
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has warned his players against underestimating Egypt, saying Brazil's unexpected elimination by Norway demonstrates how quickly fortunes can change at the FIFA World Cup. He also praised Mohamed Salah and confirmed Lionel Messi is fully fit ahead of the Round of 16 encounter.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has urged his squad to remain fully focused ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 showdown with Egypt, warning that Brazil's surprise elimination from the tournament highlights the unpredictable nature of knockout football.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference in Atlanta, Scaloni said every remaining team has earned its place in the competition and deserves respect, regardless of pre-tournament expectations or FIFA rankings.
The Argentina manager pointed to Brazil's defeat against Norway as a reminder that even the tournament's traditional favorites can be knocked out if they fail to capitalize on their opportunities.
"I watched most of the Brazil match. Norway are a very good team. When it was still 0-0, if Endrick had converted that chance, we'd probably be discussing a different outcome today," Scaloni said.
"Brazil came up against a strong opponent, and that's the reality. We know we're about to face another difficult team, so we have to stay focused."
His comments come as defending champions Argentina continue their bid to retain the World Cup title after surviving a dramatic Round of 32 contest against Cape Verde. The South Americans needed extra time to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory, underlining the increasingly competitive nature of this year's tournament.
Scaloni said that experience reinforced the importance of maintaining concentration throughout every stage of the competition, adding that knockout football leaves little margin for error.
Turning his attention to Egypt, the Argentina coach praised the African side for its organization, tactical discipline, and ability to frustrate opponents.
"They have a clear identity. They defend very well and make matches difficult for their rivals. We expect them to approach our game in the same way," he said.
"They're a very competitive team, and Mohamed Salah is a top-class player. Facing him is always exciting, and Egypt deserve to have reached this stage."
Egypt booked their place in the Round of 16 after an impressive campaign and have attracted praise for their defensive structure, disciplined teamwork, and the leadership provided by captain Mohamed Salah. Their historic progress has made them one of the standout performers among African nations at this year's tournament.
Despite widespread speculation surrounding Argentina's starting lineup, Scaloni declined to reveal his selections before informing his players.
"I've already made my decision, but I haven't told the players yet, so I'm certainly not going to announce it here," he said.
"I've been told that many of you in the media have already guessed the lineup, and you're not far off."
The coach also addressed questions regarding Lionel Messi's physical condition following the veteran captain's demanding performance against Cape Verde. Messi completed the full 120 minutes during Argentina's dramatic victory, leading to speculation about his fitness ahead of another high-intensity knockout match.
Scaloni dismissed those concerns, expressing confidence in the 39-year-old forward's readiness.
"Messi is doing perfectly well. Even after playing 120 minutes at the age of 39, he never complained about feeling tired," the coach said.
Messi once again proved decisive in Argentina's previous match, scoring, creating chances, and helping guide the defending champions through one of their toughest tests of the tournament. His leadership and experience are expected to play another crucial role against Egypt.
With a place in the World Cup quarterfinals at stake, Argentina enter the match as favorites on paper, but Scaloni insists recent tournament results have shown that reputation alone guarantees nothing.
Brazil's elimination, Germany's earlier exit, and several closely contested knockout matches have highlighted the increasing competitiveness of international football, where tactical discipline and clinical finishing often determine the outcome.
Argentina will now seek to avoid the fate suffered by several tournament favorites as they prepare for a challenging encounter against an Egyptian side determined to continue its historic World Cup journey. Both teams will enter the Round of 16 clash aiming to keep their championship ambitions alive and secure a coveted place in the tournament's final eight.
