Sports Advisor: Bangladesh Cannot Be Forced to Play in India for T20 World Cup
Bangladesh’s Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul stands firm against playing in India, insists on their right to choose venue.
Tensions surrounding Bangladesh's participation in the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup continue to grow, with the country maintaining its firm stance against playing the tournament in India. Bangladesh's Sports Advisor, Asif Nazrul, has now spoken out, emphasizing that no unreasonable pressure will force the country to play in India.
Asif Nazrul pointed out, "Unjust pressure cannot force Bangladesh to play in India. There are precedents, like when the ICC changed the venue for Pakistan’s demands in the past." He made it clear that there is no official confirmation of any plans to replace Bangladesh with Scotland in the T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had earlier requested to move their matches to Sri Lanka due to security concerns in India. A meeting between the ICC and BCB officials earlier this week in Dhaka failed to reach a resolution.
The ICC is still mulling over the venue issue, and with Scotland being the highest-ranked team not currently in the tournament, speculation has arisen about them potentially taking Bangladesh's place if needed. However, Nazrul dismissed these claims, stating that no such decision has been made yet.
In 2009, Zimbabwe had to withdraw from the T20 World Cup in England due to political reasons, and Scotland replaced them, a precedent that many are now recalling.
