World's No. 3 Badminton Player Skips Tournament in Delhi Due to Hazardous Air Pollution Levels

Denmark's world number three badminton player, Anders Antonsen, has officially withdrawn from the ongoing India Open, citing concerns over the dangerously high levels of air pollution in Delhi. This marks the third consecutive year that Antonsen has opted out of the Super 750 tournament, which has raised questions about the suitability of Delhi as a venue for top-tier sports events, especially during the winter months.

Antonsen shared a screenshot of Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) on social media, revealing pollution levels ranging from 300 to 400, classified as "very poor" and "hazardous." He emphasized that the city's air quality makes it unsuitable for professional badminton. Despite being one of the top 15 players required to compete in Super 750 events by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Antonsen chose his health over ranking, agreeing to pay a $5,000 fine for his withdrawal.

As India grapples with the ongoing debate about its capital's air quality, Antonsen hopes that conditions will improve in time for the World Championship set to take place in Delhi during the summer.
