World Cup Group Matches to Be Held in Sri Lanka
The Chronify
After months of tension and uncertainty, Bangladesh is set to play all its T20 World Cup group-stage matches in Sri Lanka, ignoring India's pressure. The ICC is expected to revise the schedule to accommodate this decision.
In a significant victory for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the national team is now set to play all its group-stage matches in Sri Lanka for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Despite intense pressure from India, which initially wanted the matches to be held in their own country, Bangladesh has stood firm on its decision.
Sources confirm that after several rounds of discussions, the ICC is likely to comply with BCB's request, allowing Bangladesh to play its group matches in Sri Lanka. This decision comes after BCB's bold move to exclude pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, signaling their determination to stand by their choices, regardless of external influence.
Earlier, there were speculations that India would offer alternate venues within their territory for Bangladesh to play their matches. However, the ongoing diplomatic and logistical issues have led to a change of plans. As a result, the ICC will now need to revise the World Cup schedule, and Bangladesh's group might see some changes too.
Currently placed in Group C, Bangladesh was originally scheduled to face England, the West Indies, Nepal, and Italy in India. But with the venue change, the ICC may have to adjust the schedule and matchups, possibly adding more games for India or reallocating matches between India and Sri Lanka.
The decision is expected to be formalized soon, with the ICC set to send an official letter to BCB, confirming this favorable outcome for Bangladesh's cricketing future.
