10 Simple Tips to Speed Up Your Computer

The Chronify

In this technology-driven era, life is almost impossible without a computer. From office work to studies or entertainment-its use is essential in every field. However, over time the speed of a PC begins to slow down. This not only disrupts work efficiency but also increases user frustration.

Even though you cannot replace a computer as frequently as a phone, following a few simple techniques can make an old computer run fast again. If your newly purchased PC also feels slow, the tips below can help.

Keep the hard disk clean

Unnecessary files, installers, and offline web pages stored on the hard disk slow down the computer. To delete these, go to the Start menu and run Disk Cleanup. Regularly deleting files will free up space and boost performance.

Remove unnecessary apps

Installed but unused apps not only occupy storage but also put pressure on RAM. To remove them, go to Windows Start → Apps and Features and uninstall the unnecessary applications.

Control startup programs

Many unnecessary apps start automatically when the computer turns on, slowing down the system. To disable them, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager. Then go to the Startup tab and turn off (Disable) unwanted programs.

Turn off search indexing

If you don’t frequently search for files on your computer, keeping Search Indexing turned off is better. This helps low-powered computers perform faster.

Check for viruses and malware

Viruses or malware significantly reduce PC performance. Use Windows’ built-in Defender or a trusted third-party software like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Avoid heavy themes and animations

Using themes or animated wallpapers slows down the system. Avoid these for better performance.

Keep the Recycle Bin empty

Regularly emptying the Recycle Bin frees up storage and speeds up the system.

Use an SSD

Replacing the HDD of an old PC with an SSD (Solid State Drive) can multiply its speed. Heavy software like Photoshop or video-editing tools load much faster on an SSD.

Keep fewer tabs open

Avoid keeping too many browser tabs open at the same time.

Additional Tips

• Clean dust inside the computer at least once a month.

• Regularly delete browsing history and cookies.
