AI Technology in Journalism: How Far Has Bangladesh Advanced?
The Chronify
Technological advancements are reshaping journalism worldwide. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now revolutionizing not just industry, commerce, and healthcare, but also the media. Globally, major news organizations are already using AI to quickly write news, verify images, analyze data, and create reader-focused content, and Bangladesh is gradually joining this trend.
However, the use of AI has also brought new challenges. Identifying fake news, verifying deepfake videos or manipulated images, maintaining readers’ trust, and upholding ethical journalism have become major concerns. As technology advances, the methods for spreading misinformation are also evolving rapidly.
A survey titled “Media Metamorphosis: AI and Bangladeshi Newsrooms 2024” found that more than half of journalists (51%) have used AI in their work, yet the formal adoption of AI in newsrooms remains relatively low (20%).
Among journalists using AI, ChatGPT is the most popular tool, used by 78% of respondents. It is followed by Grammarly (52%) and Google Translate (44%). Other widely used tools include Canva (37%), Google Gemini (19%), DALL·E and Adobe Sensei (each 15%), and MidJourney, Tableau, Factmata, and Turnitin (each 7%). Additionally, 11% of journalists reported using other tools.
Bangladeshi media use AI primarily to improve grammar and writing style (52%). AI is also widely applied for research and background verification (48%).
Although the survey for this year has not yet been released, it is clear that these numbers have increased. Various initiatives are being undertaken to support this trend.
To enhance AI-driven journalism in Bangladesh, it is crucial to provide journalists with training, invest in technological infrastructure, and emphasize policies and ethics. Universities have already introduced courses on data journalism and digital media, which will help develop skilled human resources in the coming years.
To further expand and strengthen the use of AI in journalism, a special workshop titled “AI in Journalism” was held on Saturday in Gulshan, Dhaka. The workshop was jointly organized by the Bangladesh ICT Journalist Forum (BIJF) and the Bangladesh ICT and Innovation Network (BIN) Trust.
During the workshop, trainers demonstrated how to use modern AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Google AI Studio to create news quickly and accurately, verify information, and generate new ideas.
BIJF President Hitler A. Halim said, “Training like this is extremely timely for journalists. AI-based tools are redefining the future of journalism. These workshops allow us not only to learn but also to apply what we learn in practice. I sincerely thank BIN Trust for organizing this, and BIJF will continue to conduct such programs regularly in the future.”
Syed Almas Kabir, Chairman of BIN Trust and former President of BASIS, said, “This is the era of information technology. Academic degrees alone are no longer enough; now technological skills are essential. In fast-changing fields like journalism, mastering AI tools is the key to staying relevant. Our journalists must adapt and use technology effectively.”
The use of AI in journalism is gradually increasing in Bangladesh. Journalists who participated in the workshop noted that such training will make them more confident in tackling future challenges.
In conclusion, AI is not a threat to journalism but a powerful tool. If journalists use it correctly, Bangladeshi journalism can advance in line with international standards.
