Reign of the Machines: Will Human Skills Be Defeated by AI?
The Chronify
In the past decade, a wave of automation has swept through Bangladesh’s garment industry. As a result, employment has dropped by around 5%, since automated machines can now perform manual tasks faster and with greater precision. But this was only the beginning.
In the past few years, this wave of transformation has reached offices, courtrooms, call centers and even creative professions. We are now seeing AI chatbots and automated tools being used in fields like data analysis, accounting, and customer service. This shift has created deep uncertainty among middle-income professionals, threatening their livelihoods.
The picture of the future could be even more alarming. Studies suggest that within the next 5–10 years, nearly 40% of repetitive tasks may disappear because of AI. This isn’t just a number it’s a stark reality. If our young generation doesn’t acquire new skills, the rate of educated unemployment in the country could rise dramatically. But is our education system ready to face this challenge? Or are we still trapped in a traditional model of learning that fails to meet the demands of the future?
If this problem isn’t addressed, its impact won’t be limited to employment it will penetrate deep into the social fabric. The effects are already visible. Young people, especially those pursuing conventional degrees, are realizing that their academic subjects are losing relevance in the job market. They are growing disheartened about their career prospects. Meanwhile, children are becoming addicted to smartphones and AI-driven games, hindering their creativity and social development.
In the future, every sector will feel this impact. When a doctor becomes heavily reliant on AI diagnostic tools, will their human touch and experience lose value? When an engineer depends on AI-powered design software, where will their creativity go? These changes will become so deeply embedded in our daily lives that we might fail to notice the erosion of our human values. Will this wave of change consume our humanity?
Escaping this grim scenario requires more than just government or institutional action it demands responsibility from every citizen, family, and educational institution. Thankfully, some proactive organizations and individuals are taking initiative: organizing coding workshops for school students, teaching young people data science, and emphasizing the importance of AI-related technical skills. These efforts are laying the foundation for a new kind of society.
We must not see this transformation only from a technological perspective it’s a human crisis. The real question is: will we merely work like machines, or will we harness our human creativity to guide the machines? Our education system must now focus on creativity and AI-oriented technical skills such as coding, data science, and robotics. That is the only way to build a strong foundation for future generations.
This crisis can be solved if we take the right steps. We need to develop a roadmap one that helps us prepare for sudden employment disruptions. This roadmap should include a complete overhaul of the education system, continuous training for workers, and investment in AI-related research. Above all, we must cultivate a positive mindset toward this transformation, so we can evolve alongside technology instead of being overtaken by it.
Let this change not frighten us but empower us. We must remember: human creativity, compassion, and problem-solving abilities are far greater than any AI. It’s time we awaken that strength within ourselves.
