Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to begin his first official foreign tour since taking office, visiting Malaysia and China, where discussions on trade, investment, regional cooperation, and infrastructure development are expected to result in a series of agreements and memorandums.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to embark on a two-nation official tour beginning on Sunday, with visits to Malaysia and China aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships.
The upcoming trip marks Tarique Rahman’s first overseas visit since assuming office and is being viewed as an important step in advancing the government’s foreign policy priorities. Officials say the visits will focus on expanding trade, investment, labor cooperation, and regional connectivity while deepening bilateral relations with two of Bangladesh’s key partners in Asia.
According to information shared during a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, the Prime Minister will first travel to Malaysia on 21 June. During his visit, he is expected to hold talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on a range of issues of mutual interest.
Key topics on the agenda include the reopening and expansion of Bangladesh’s labor market opportunities in Malaysia, Bangladesh’s efforts to strengthen engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and discussions on a possible free trade agreement between the two countries. Officials indicated that several agreements could also be signed during the visit, although details were not immediately disclosed.
Following the Malaysia tour, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will travel to China, where he is scheduled to remain from 23 to 26 June. The China visit is expected to be particularly significant, with a broad agenda covering infrastructure development, economic cooperation, water resource management, and strategic collaboration.
During the visit, the Prime Minister is expected to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang on 25 June before holding a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on 26 June. The high-level discussions are expected to focus on strengthening existing partnerships and exploring new areas of cooperation.
One of the major issues expected to dominate the discussions is integrated river and water management, particularly the proposed Teesta Multipurpose Project. Bangladeshi officials have indicated that the project will receive considerable attention during the talks, reflecting its importance to the country's long-term water resource and regional development plans.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir told reporters that Bangladesh and China are preparing to sign a substantial package of agreements and cooperation frameworks during the visit. According to him, the two sides are expected to sign 13 memorandums of understanding, two formal agreements, one action plan, and one protocol.
The planned documents are expected to cover a variety of sectors, including economic development, infrastructure, technology, education, and other areas of bilateral cooperation. Officials also suggested that defense and military cooperation between the two countries could see further expansion as part of the broader strategic partnership.
The visit comes at a time when Bangladesh is seeking to diversify its economic partnerships, attract greater foreign investment, and strengthen regional connectivity. China remains one of Bangladesh’s largest development partners and a major source of infrastructure financing and investment.
Government officials believe the tour will help accelerate ongoing projects while opening new avenues for cooperation with both Malaysia and China. The discussions are also expected to contribute to Bangladesh’s broader economic and diplomatic objectives in the Asia-Pacific region.
A delegation of 27 members, including the Foreign Minister, Information Minister, senior government officials, and advisers, will accompany the Prime Minister during the visits.
Analysts view the tour as an important diplomatic initiative that could shape Bangladesh’s foreign relations agenda in the coming years. With a series of agreements expected to be signed and high-level meetings scheduled in both countries, the visit is likely to play a key role in strengthening Bangladesh’s regional partnerships and advancing its development priorities.
