A fine will be imposed just for donating food

A municipal court in Oklahoma, USA, has come up with an innovative way to collect traffic violation fines. Individuals can choose to pay their fines not in cash, but by donating food instead.

Not only for traffic violations, but this system is also being applied to collect certain other municipal fines. The innovative fine-collection method has also been warmly welcomed by local library authorities, who have decided to use it to collect overdue book fines though it won’t apply if books are damaged or lost.

Residents of Chickasha, Oklahoma, can pay their traffic and other municipal fines this way for the remainder of November, while library fines can be paid through this method throughout December.

Fines can be partially or fully paid by donating food. The initiative has been named the “Food for Fines Program.”

The Chickasha municipal authorities stated on their website that soon citizens will be able to use the Food for Fines program to pay for traffic violations and overdue library fines.

Under this program, each item of non-perishable food donated reduces a fine by $10, and an individual can reduce up to $100 in fines.

Even those who have outstanding fines with arrest warrants issued against them can participate in this program without fear of being taken into custody. Those with fines over $100 can also plan how to pay the remaining balance.

While the court has announced that the program will run until November 26, the Chickasha public library has extended it throughout December.

All food collected under the Food for Fines program will be donated to the Chickasha Emergency Food Pantry, according to city officials.

Chickasha is not the only city in the United States with a food-for-fines initiative. Several other cities have implemented similar programs, some of which have been running for years.
