After six consecutive days of flight disruptions, India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has refunded a total of 6.10 billion rupees to passengers for ticket fares.

Alongside the refunds, nearly 3,000 pieces of luggage that had been held by the airline have also been successfully delivered to passengers.

On Sunday evening (December 7), India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation released these figures in an official statement. IndiGo stated that it is making every possible effort to normalize the situation and is aiming to restore regular flight operations by December 10.

The airline had been instructed to complete all passenger refunds by 8 PM on Sunday. According to IndiGo’s statement, 650 flights were cancelled on Sunday, while 1,650 flights operated as scheduled. Under normal circumstances, the airline operates around 2,300 flights daily.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said that services are being delivered on time in nearly 75 percent of cases. A dedicated support cell has been set up to assist passengers and resolve refund-related issues. From Wednesday to Sunday, approximately 2,000 flights were cancelled over six days.

The disruption has been attributed to a new regulation issued by India’s civil aviation regulator, the DGCA. The rule, known as Flight Duty Time Limitations, defines working hours and rest periods for pilots and crew. Its implementation led to staff and pilot shortages, triggering widespread flight cancellations.

IndiGo also announced full waiver on ticket cancellations and rebooking until December 15. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the DGCA issued a show-cause notice to the airline over the severe mismanagement.

Although the regulator demanded a detailed explanation within 24 hours, IndiGo requested an additional day to respond. In an internal video message, CEO Pieter Elbers assured employees and passengers that operations would recover step by step, expressing optimism that the situation would normalize by next Wednesday.
