Australia Rules Out Fuel Rationing After Major Refinery Fire Disrupts Supply

Australia will not impose fuel rationing despite a significant drop in production following a major fire at one of its most critical oil refineries, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed.

The blaze broke out late Wednesday night at the Corio Refinery, operated by Viva Energy, near Geelong. The fire, reportedly caused by equipment failure, burned for approximately 13 hours before being brought under control, raising concerns over fuel supply disruptions in the country.

The Corio facility plays a vital role in Australia’s energy network, typically accounting for around half of the fuel supply in the state of Victoria and about 10 percent of the nation’s overall production. The incident comes at a time when global oil markets are already under pressure due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted supply chains worldwide.
 

Despite the setback, Albanese sought to reassure the public, stating that a large portion of fuel production remains operational. According to government assessments, around 80 percent of diesel and aviation fuel output is continuing, while petrol production is currently running at approximately 60 percent capacity, with expectations of gradual recovery.

Australia is currently operating under stage two of its four-tier fuel security framework, introduced in response to global supply uncertainties. The prime minister clarified that the situation does not warrant escalation to stage three, which would involve restrictions on fuel usage or rationing measures.

To mitigate potential shortages, the government has already taken steps to secure additional fuel supplies from international partners, including agreements to import significant volumes of diesel from regional sources.

The incident has once again highlighted Australia’s reliance on imported refined fuels, prompting renewed calls from leadership to strengthen domestic refining capabilities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as repair efforts at the refinery move forward and global energy conditions remain volatile.
