Hungary Holds High Stakes Vote With Orbán Under Pressure
The Chronify
Hungarians began voting on Sunday in a parliamentary election that puts Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 16 year hold on power under its heaviest pressure in more than a decade. Voters are choosing the 199 member parliament in a contest watched closely across Europe because of Hungary’s stance on Russia, Ukraine and the European Union.
Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party entered election day facing a strong challenge from Péter Magyar and his centre right Tisza party. Recent opinion polls showed Tisza ahead by 7 to 9 percentage points, making this the closest national race Orbán has faced since returning to office in 2010.
During the campaign, Orbán cast the vote as a choice between safety and war, claiming Magyar would pull Hungary deeper into the conflict in Ukraine. Magyar rejected that charge and focused his campaign on corruption, public services and closer ties with the European Union.
The election comes after years of weak economic performance, rising living costs and growing public anger over corruption allegations involving figures close to the government. Younger voters have shown especially strong support for Tisza, while critics say Fidesz still holds major structural advantages through its grip on public institutions and much of the media landscape.
The result is widely seen as a defining moment for Hungary’s political direction. A Fidesz victory would extend Orbán’s long rule and preserve his nationalist course, while a Tisza win would open the way for a sharp shift in domestic policy and Hungary’s relations with its Western allies.
