Dhaka engages Tehran amid regional tensions to ensure secure transit of Banglar Joyjatra and safeguard maritime operations

Bangladesh has formally requested Iran’s assistance to ensure the safe passage of its flagged vessel Banglar Joyjatra through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region.

The request was made by Khalilur Rahman during a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

During the discussion, the Bangladeshi foreign minister emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in the region and reiterated Dhaka’s consistent position in favor of restraint, dialogue, and diplomatic solutions to ongoing conflicts.

In response, the Iranian deputy foreign minister confirmed that necessary instructions had already been issued to relevant authorities to facilitate the vessel’s transit, although he acknowledged that the regional situation remains sensitive. Both sides agreed to maintain close communication regarding the matter.

Khalilur Rahman expressed appreciation for Iran’s earlier decision to include Bangladesh among a select group of countries permitted to navigate the Strait of Hormuz under current conditions.

The issue of maritime safety had also been raised earlier this month in Dhaka during a meeting between Bangladeshi officials and Iran’s ambassador, where similar concerns were discussed regarding the safe movement of Bangladeshi vessels, including those transporting crude oil.

Diplomatic exchanges between the two countries have also included expressions of mutual support and cooperation, with Iran acknowledging Bangladesh’s humanitarian gestures and balanced stance on regional developments.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime routes, making the safe passage of commercial vessels a key concern for countries engaged in global trade and energy transportation.
