Canada Rejects Most Indian Study Permit Applicants Due to Rising Fraud Concerns

Canada's Changing Immigration Landscape: The Decline of Indian Students Seeking Study Permits

The Chronify

Canada's crackdown on international student permits has led to a significant rise in rejection rates for applicants from India, with 74% of study permits for Indian students being denied in August 2025. This shift reflects Canada's growing concern over fraud and an effort to maintain the integrity of its immigration system.

In an alarming development for Indian students, Canada has significantly increased the rejection rate for study permit applications. In August 2025, 74% of Indian applicants were denied permits, a sharp increase from 32% in the previous year. This contrasts with an overall rejection rate of 40% for all study permit applications in the same period.

The surge in rejections comes after Canadian authorities uncovered numerous fraudulent applications, including over 1,500 linked to fake letters of acceptance in 2023. As part of the crackdown on fraud, Canada has implemented stricter verification processes and increased financial requirements for applicants.

India has long been Canada's largest source of international students, but the recent rise in rejection rates is discouraging many potential applicants. The decline is particularly noticeable in Canadian institutions like the University of Waterloo, where Indian student enrolment has dropped by two-thirds in the past few years.

While experts agree that the crackdown is necessary to prevent fraud, many believe it could negatively impact the relationship between Canada and India. The Indian embassy in Ottawa has expressed concerns, emphasizing that Indian students have historically contributed greatly to Canada's academic landscape.
