A deadly series of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri, has resulted in the death of one person and injuries to four others, including an Uber driver carrying supporters of Argentina’s national football team to a FIFA World Cup match venue.
According to local authorities, the incidents occurred on the evening of June 16 across a roughly five-mile stretch of the city. Police believe the attacks may be connected and are actively searching for a 22-year-old suspect who remains at large. Investigators have described the individual as armed and dangerous.
The shootings took place between approximately 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. local time. Three of the incidents occurred along Interstate 70 and Interstate 670, while the remaining attacks were reported on Truman Road. All locations were several miles away from Arrowhead Stadium, where the World Cup match between Argentina and Algeria was being held.
Two Argentine supporters who were traveling to the stadium told media outlets that they were riding in an Uber when another vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire. Initially believing that a tire had burst, they later realized the driver had been struck by a bullet in the leg.
The passengers were subsequently taken to a police station to provide statements before officers escorted them safely to the stadium. Authorities later confirmed that the Uber driver's injuries were not life-threatening and that he is expected to recover.
Police reports indicate that all victims were inside vehicles when shots were fired at them while traveling on city roads and highways. The attacks appear to have been random, with no immediate indication that the victims were specifically targeted because of their nationality or attendance at the football match.
Three adults and one teenager were injured during the shooting spree and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Officials said one of the adult victims remains in critical condition.
The fatality occurred after officers responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into a utility pole on Truman Road. When emergency personnel arrived, they discovered the driver had suffered a gunshot wound. The victim was rushed to a hospital but later died from the injuries.
Kansas City police believe the shootings were carried out within a relatively short timeframe and may have been committed by the same suspect. Investigators later identified a residence in the nearby suburb of Independence that was believed to be linked to the suspect.
Law enforcement officers executed a search operation at the property on the morning of June 17. However, the suspect was not found at the location and remains on the run.
Authorities also revealed that the suspect is wanted in connection with a separate illegal weapons case dating back to June 11. An arrest warrant had already been issued before the latest incidents occurred.
Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any information that could assist investigators. Additional patrols have been deployed in affected areas as authorities continue efforts to locate the suspect and determine the motive behind the attacks.
The incidents have raised concerns about public safety during the ongoing FIFA World Cup in the United States, although officials emphasized that the shootings occurred away from the stadium and that security measures around tournament venues remain in place.
Investigations into the shootings are ongoing, and authorities have not yet announced any arrests.
