China agrees to increase imports from the US: Trump
The Chronify
President Donald Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping has “partially” agreed to increase imports from the United States. He shared this information on Monday following a phone conversation between the two leaders.
On Tuesday, aboard Air Force One, Trump said that Xi Jinping had been asked to increase imports of goods from the United States.
Earlier, the Chinese president described the phone conversation with Trump as “positive, friendly, and constructive.”
Trump added, “I think we will be surprised by President Xi Jinping’s actions on this. I told him to start buying some products a bit faster.” He noted, “I want them to buy more, and he has partially agreed to do so.”
Meanwhile, Beijing announced last month that it will resume soybean purchases from the United States and lift export restrictions on rare earth minerals.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin stated that China has committed to purchasing 12 million metric tons of soybeans from American farmers this year.
The phone call came a few weeks after Trump and Xi Jinping met in South Korea, where they agreed on the framework of a trade deal, though it has not yet been finalized.
This overall progress in trade between the two countries is being seen as a sign of easing tensions in the ongoing tariff war.
