Dhaka's Air Quality Index (AQI) reached a hazardous 217, ranking third globally, as pollution continues to worsen.

On December 21, 2025, Dhaka was ranked the third worst city globally in terms of air quality, with an AQI score of 217. According to IQAir, only Delhi (283) and Cairo (223) had worse air quality at the time.

An AQI score of 201-300 is considered an emergency with health warnings. This level of pollution can pose significant risks, especially to children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions, prompting advice to limit both indoor and outdoor activities.

Dhaka’s AQI has been classified as unhealthy, with the PM2.5 concentration 20 times higher than the WHO’s annual guideline for air quality. The capital, one of the most densely populated cities globally, continues to struggle with poor air quality, especially during winter, despite slight improvements in the monsoon season.
