Attack on Al-Adum Mosque in Maiduguri Leaves Worshippers Dead and Dozens Injured

At least five people were killed and 35 others injured when a suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive inside the Al-Adum Mosque in Maiduguri, Nigeria, during evening prayers. The attack occurred around 6 pm local time on Wednesday, as congregants had gathered for worship at the mosque in the Borno State capital. The explosion left worshippers in panic, with victims rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the State Specialist Hospital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which is believed to be part of the ongoing violence in Nigeria’s northeast, where Islamist militant groups Boko Haram and its ISWAP faction have been waging a violent campaign for over 15 years, targeting civilians, mosques, and markets. The blast occurred during a period of heightened security concerns in the region.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attack, calling it "barbaric and inhumane" and urging heightened vigilance during the festive season. He offered condolences to the victims’ families and called for greater protection in public spaces. Police have confirmed the casualty figures and are continuing investigations into the incident.
