Half a Million Palestinians Lose Jobs Since War

Workers have suffered financial losses estimated at more than $9 billion, largely due to restrictions on reaching workplaces and the destruction of key economic sectors such as agriculture, construction, and services.

More than 500,000 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza have lost their means of earning a living since the Israeli war began in October 2023.

In a statement issued on the day before yesterday, the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions said Palestinian workers are facing ongoing restrictions, including blockades, closures, and frequent military raids carried out by Israeli forces.

The federation described Israeli policies as a “compound crime” against workers, saying they violate Palestinians’ basic right to work and to live with dignity.

According to the statement, more than two years of sustained military actions have resulted in over half a million Palestinians losing their jobs. Unemployment has reached record levels, surpassing 50 percent in the West Bank and exceeding 84 percent in Gaza.

The federation added that workers have suffered financial losses estimated at more than $9 billion, largely due to restrictions on reaching workplaces and the destruction of key economic sectors such as agriculture, construction, and services.

It held the Israeli government fully responsible for these losses, as well as for the deaths of dozens of Palestinian workers who were killed at military checkpoints or in attacks by settlers while attempting to support their families. The statement said these actions violate international labor standards and the Geneva Conventions.

Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have resulted in the deaths of more than 70,700 Palestinians and injuries to over 170,000 others in Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, attacks by Israeli forces and settlers have killed at least 1,097 Palestinians and injured nearly 11,000 during the same period.
