Mamdani Calls on New Yorkers to Boycott Starbucks

The Chronify

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has called for a public boycott of Starbucks as unionized baristas staged a coordinated nationwide strike over stalled contract negotiations.

In a statement posted on X, Mamdani voiced support for Starbucks Workers United, which organized the walkout as an Unfair Labor Practices strike. He urged New Yorkers to refrain from purchasing Starbucks products until a contract agreement is reached.

“Starbucks workers across the country are on an Unfair Labor Practices strike, fighting for a fair contract. While workers are on strike, I won’t be buying any Starbucks, and I’m asking you to join us. Together, we can send a powerful message: No contract, no coffee,” Mamdani wrote.

According to the union, thousands of workers in more than 25 U.S. cities took part in protests on Red Cup Day, accusing the company of refusing to negotiate in good faith. Starbucks rejected the claims, saying most stores remained open and that it continues to offer competitive wages and benefits.
