Two light aircraft collided in mid-air near Sydney, Australia. One of them crashed, killing its pilot. The news was reported by AFP, citing Australian police.
New South Wales police said rescuers found the pilot’s body in the wreckage of the crashed aircraft in bushland near an airfield in Wedderburn, southwest of Sydney. According to police, they were informed that two small planes had collided in mid-air. One of the aircraft then crashed into nearby scrubland.
According to a report by The Canberra Times, an immediate investigation team has been formed. Investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) will collect evidence from the crash site and probe the cause of the collision.
The investigation team will map the crash site and examine the wreckage and damage. They will also collect necessary components for further detailed analysis. The cause of the accident, which occurred on Sunday morning local time, is still unknown.
However, the Australian Associated Press reported that the body of one pilot was recovered at the scene. The other aircraft involved in the incident managed to land safely, and its pilot was unharmed.
In a statement on Sunday (30 November), the ATSB said, “One of the aircraft involved in the collision landed safely, but the other crashed into the ground, killing its pilot.” The bureau has requested the public to avoid the accident area to facilitate the investigation.
