Peace talks have stalled; Russia launches massive attacks in Ukraine

The Chronify

The three-day peace talks between Ukrainian and U.S. officials in Florida, United States, have ended without any result. Meanwhile, on the final day of the discussions, Saturday (December 6), Russia launched major air attacks targeting several Ukrainian cities and key infrastructure.

On the day of Saturday’s discussions in Florida, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he had a “constructive” phone conversation with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. However, both sides agreed on one point: any meaningful progress toward establishing genuine peace depends entirely on Moscow’s willingness.

Along with diplomatic efforts, the talks also reflected the realities on the battlefield, where Russian forces continue to advance across eastern Ukraine. Early Friday morning, Russia launched a new wave of large-scale attacks on Ukraine. In this assault, Russia fired 653 drones and 51 missiles at Ukraine’s energy facilities and key military and civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that 29 locations were struck, leaving at least eight people injured. The attack severed the power supply to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, raising concerns over the safety of its reactors. The shutdown of this nuclear facility requires continuous power to keep its six reactors cooled. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has already expressed concern over the situation.

President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of prioritizing energy infrastructure as the main target in the latest attack. He also said a railway station near the capital Kyiv had been destroyed. Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 585 drones and 30 missiles.

Moscow, however, stated that the strikes targeted only Ukraine’s military-industrial complexes and the energy infrastructure supplying them.

Due to Russia’s gains on the battlefield, diplomatic efforts are now being emphasized to establish peace in Ukraine. In November alone, Russian troops captured 505 square kilometers of the Pokrovsk area in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, known as a “logistics hub.” This captured area is nearly twice the amount seized in October.
