Security teams continue to guard the area while technical experts analyze the drone and gather evidence.
Türkiye’s Interior Ministry has confirmed that an unmanned aerial vehicle believed to be a Russian-origin Orlan-10 reconnaissance drone was found in the Izmit district of Kocaeli province.
An investigation into the incident is currently in progress, according to The Daily Sabah.
According to the ministry, the drone was spotted in the Çubuklubala neighborhood of Izmit. Initial assessments suggest that the device matches the model and purpose of the Russian-made Orlan-10, commonly used for surveillance and intelligence gathering. Officials noted that detailed examinations are still being carried out.
The UAV reportedly crashed in a rural part of the neighborhood, prompting authorities to dispatch gendarmerie units along with crime scene investigators after receiving a tipoff. Security personnel sealed off the area and launched a technical inspection at the site.
A local resident said the drone had actually fallen several days ago, but he avoided approaching it due to fear.
“It’s been here for about three days. I saw it on Wednesday while I was coming down from the fields. I heard a noise and realized something was falling. When it crashed, I was too scared to go near it,” he said, explaining that he was worried the device might be explosive.
The resident later informed the neighborhood headman when no one arrived to recover the drone.
Çubuklubala’s headman, Muharrem Kaymaz, stated that the villager had noticed the object around 11 a.m. on Wednesday but avoided it out of concern. “Today he notified us, and we contacted the authorities. Investigations are still ongoing and nothing is certain yet,” Kaymaz added.
