Thailand’s cabinet has officially approved the recognition of Thai cats as national symbols, marking a significant step in preserving their heritage and promoting economic growth. The decision, made on November 18, follows recommendations from the National Identity Committee and is supported by historical and genetic evidence showcasing the unique traits of these cats.
Thai cats, deeply embedded in Thailand’s culture, have been featured in traditions, folklore, and daily life for centuries. Known for their distinct appearance and friendly, outgoing nature, they are a source of national pride.
Currently, five pure Thai breeds are officially recognized: Suphalak, Korat, Wichienmas, Konja, and Khao Manee. This recognition aims to promote conservation efforts, standardization, and wider adoption of these breeds among pet enthusiasts. It also seeks to protect Thai ownership rights and prevent foreign registrations.
The move is seen as an opportunity to stimulate creative industries, tourism, and cultural exports linked to Thai cats. The Ministry of Culture views it as a crucial step in preserving Thailand’s identity, ensuring that these iconic cats thrive both locally and internationally.
