The EU is banning imports of Russian gas

The European Union will ban imports of Russian gas by 2027. On Wednesday (3 December), the member states of the bloc agreed to this landmark deal, according to AFP.
The decision is the result of a compromise between the European Parliament and the member states. The Parliament had wanted the ban to take effect even earlier.
A statement from the European Council said the main objective of this measure is to fully end dependence on Russian energy, addressing the situation created by Russia’s “weaponisation” of gas supplies.
According to the agreement, the ban on gas supplied through pipelines under long-term contracts will take effect by 1 November 2027. For liquefied natural gas (LNG), the ban will take effect from 1 January 2027. For short-term contracts, the LNG ban will be effective from 25 April 2026, and the pipeline gas ban from 17 June 2026. However, the final approval of the European Parliament and member states will be required before these timelines come into force.
