Earlier on Friday, Israel announced its recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not received formal international recognition.
Türkiye has criticized Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, describing the move as a violation of international law and an intrusion into Somalia’s internal affairs.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Türkiye’s Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said the recognition undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity and risks further destabilizing an already fragile region. He warned that such actions could increase tensions and security risks in the Horn of Africa.
Duran accused the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of acting irresponsibly and said the decision runs counter to ongoing efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region. He called on the international community to adopt a collective stance against initiatives that could escalate regional instability.
Reaffirming Ankara’s position, Duran said Türkiye remains firmly committed to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

While it has functioned for decades with its own administrative, political, and security institutions, Somalia’s central government continues to regard the territory as an inseparable part of the country.
The Somali government rejects Somaliland’s independence claim and considers any direct engagement with the region without its consent a violation of Somalia’s national unity.
