In a bid to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Paris.
The French President’s office announced that the meeting will take place in Paris on Monday.
France has taken this initiative at a time when the United States is moving forward with a plan aimed at halting the war and establishing peace in Ukraine.
According to media reports, an official said on Saturday that the two leaders will discuss the “conditions for a just and lasting peace.” At the same time, a high-level Ukrainian delegation is on its way to Washington.
Meanwhile, Zelensky is facing political turmoil at home after the removal of his key aide Andriy Yermak.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said, “To advance the discussions, we will welcome President Zelensky to Paris on Monday. Peace is within reach-if Putin abandons his unrealistic dream of subjugating Ukraine and restoring the Soviet empire.”
Warning Moscow, he said that Russian President Vladimir Putin must accept a ceasefire. Otherwise, Russia will face new sanctions that could cripple its economy, while Europe will further strengthen its support for Ukraine.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Since then, Macron and Zelensky have remained in close contact. Zelensky last visited the Élysée Palace on November 17.
