Cape Verde head coach Pedro Leitão Brito says his side has the belief and ambition to challenge reigning champions Argentina despite entering the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout match as clear underdogs.

Cape Verde head coach Pedro Leitão Brito has expressed confidence that his team can pose a serious challenge to defending world champions Argentina when the two sides meet in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Widely viewed as the favorites, Argentina enter the match with a strong record and one of the tournament's most talented squads. However, Brito believes his players have the courage, determination, and quality to make life difficult for the reigning champions.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the Cape Verde coach said his team fully believes in its ability to compete against one of world football's strongest nations.

"Of course we believe. We believe in our ability, our players, and our team. We know it will be a very difficult match, but we can hurt our opponents. We are brave, ambitious, and we will play to win," Brito said.

The coach emphasized that confidence remains one of his team's greatest strengths, adding that Cape Verde will approach the match with a positive mindset while remaining fully focused on earning a place in the next round.

"Our belief and self-confidence are our biggest strengths. We will play with courage and a positive mentality. We want our players to enjoy the occasion, but at the same time stay completely focused on doing everything necessary to reach the next stage," he added.

Brito also acknowledged Argentina's quality, describing the South American giants as one of the tournament's strongest contenders.

"They are the reigning world champions and one of the best teams in this competition. We are preparing to face the entire Argentina team. We know Lionel Messi is one of the greatest footballers in the world, but our challenge is against Argentina as a collective," he said.

Reflecting on the tournament's surprises, Brito noted that several so-called smaller nations have already demonstrated they can compete with football's traditional powerhouses.

"Teams considered smaller have shown they can compete on equal terms with the biggest nations. That proves they are capable of presenting the toughest challenges. Argentina will be a huge test for us, but we also want to make this a very difficult match for them," he said.

Cape Verde has emerged as one of the tournament's surprise packages, exceeding expectations to reach the knockout rounds and earning praise for its disciplined performances and resilient style of play.

Argentina, meanwhile, has entered the match as one of the leading contenders for the World Cup title, relying on a squad filled with experienced internationals and world-class talent led by captain Lionel Messi.

The upcoming encounter promises to be a classic underdog-versus-favorite contest, with Cape Verde aiming to produce one of the tournament's biggest upsets while Argentina seeks to continue its pursuit of another World Cup crown.

Although Argentina remains the clear favorite on paper, Brito's comments underline his team's determination to challenge the defending champions and prove that smaller footballing nations can compete on the sport's biggest stage.
