Players and officials could face strict punishment under experimental disciplinary rule approved by IFAB

Football’s governing body FIFA is set to introduce a new disciplinary rule at the 2026 World Cup that could see players receive a red card for covering their mouth while speaking to opponents on the pitch.

The decision was approved during a recent International Football Association Board (IFAB) meeting in Vancouver, where FIFA’s proposed regulations received clearance for testing. Under the new rule, any player who uses their jersey or hand to hide their mouth during on-field verbal exchanges may be penalized, depending on the referee’s interpretation of the situation.

Officials say the move is aimed at improving transparency and preventing misconduct such as abusive language or discriminatory behavior during matches. The rule will initially be tested but is expected to be implemented officially during the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The issue gained attention after several controversial incidents in international and club competitions, where players were seen covering their mouths during heated exchanges, raising concerns over possible inappropriate or offensive remarks.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino supported the initiative, stating that the rule is intended to have a preventive impact and discourage hidden misconduct on the field. He emphasized that players with nothing to hide should have no reason to conceal their words during matches.

The new regulation will also extend to team officials, who could face sanctions if found encouraging players to leave the field or disrupt the game. In extreme cases, teams responsible for match abandonment may be deemed to have forfeited the match.
