Asif Mahmud, former advisor to the interim government, has joined the National Citizen Party (NCP) and taken on the role of spokesperson for the party during the election period. However, he has decided not to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, a former advisor to the interim government, has officially joined the National Citizen Party (NCP). Along with his membership, Mahmud has also been appointed as the NCP's spokesperson for the election period. However, he made it clear that he will not be participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The announcement was made during a press conference held on Monday (29 December) at the NCP's temporary office in the Banglamotor area of Dhaka. NCP's convener, Nahid Islam, officially introduced Asif Mahmud to the party and welcomed him with flowers.
In the press briefing, Nahid Islam informed that the NCP has already submitted nomination papers for 40 constituencies across the country. However, the final seat-sharing agreement with other parties is yet to be decided. The official announcement regarding the seat-sharing arrangement will be made soon.
It has also been revealed that Asif Mahmud had collected a nomination paper for the Muradnagar (Comilla-3) constituency, intending to contest the election. Rumjanul Karim, an NCP member from the South Rosulpur area of Comilla Sadar, had also purchased a nomination paper in support of Mahmud as an independent candidate. Although this information had not been disclosed earlier, it was confirmed by administrative officer Md. Shaheb Ali from the district commissioner’s office on Saturday.
Minhajul Haque, the chief coordinator for NCP's Muradnagar branch, confirmed that Asif Mahmud had submitted a copy of his National ID card and collected the nomination form from the district commissioner’s office. He also expressed hope that Mahmud would contest the election from the Muradnagar seat.
It is worth noting that on December 10, Asif Mahmud had resigned from his position as an advisor to the interim government and announced his decision to run for the Dhaka-10 seat. He has already registered as a voter in this constituency and continues his election campaign there.
