BNP Plans Massive Rally as Tarique Rahman Returns After 17 Years in Exile
Bangladesh's main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is preparing for a grand reception as its leader, Tarique Rahman, returns to the country after nearly 17 years in exile. Rahman, who is widely considered the BNP's prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming parliamentary elections in February, is expected to be welcomed by up to five million supporters in the capital.
Rahman, 60, is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and has served as the BNP's acting chairman. He has been in exile in London since 2008 after facing multiple criminal convictions, including money laundering and charges related to an alleged plot to assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, after Hasina's removal from office, the legal hurdles to Rahman’s return were cleared.
The BNP’s rally to mark Rahman’s homecoming is seen as a significant political moment, with security arrangements being coordinated with authorities. Rahman is expected to visit his mother, who has been seriously ill for months, after attending the rally. The homecoming comes as the BNP regains momentum, following a student-led uprising last year that ousted Hasina’s government.
The political landscape in Bangladesh remains volatile, and the upcoming elections are viewed as crucial for restoring democratic legitimacy to the country after years of political instability.
